{"id":116,"date":"2016-08-14T18:36:56","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T23:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stonehouse.club\/?p=116"},"modified":"2016-08-14T18:36:56","modified_gmt":"2016-08-14T23:36:56","slug":"homestead-happenings-for-the-week-of-august-7-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/?p=116","title":{"rendered":"Homestead Happenings for the Week of August 7, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to our new feature on the StoneHouse Homestead blog.\u00a0 We will be posting a \u00a0weekly update of the &#8220;goings on&#8221; here and plans for the coming week.\u00a0 Hopefully this will give you\u00a0a better idea of\u00a0what our daily life is\u00a0like on our\u00a0little homestead\u00a0in suburbia.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the week started\u00a0with digging the potatoes.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0previous years I had always\u00a0purchased seed potatoes from the local Southern States Co-op.\u00a0\u00a0Everything I had read about planting potatoes said to always use certified disease free seed potatoes.\u00a0 The articles warned about\u00a0the horrors of using\u00a0potatoes left over from the previous year.\u00a0 Those potatoes could harbor disease that had the potential of devastating the potato crop.\u00a0 All the hard work of planting and caring for\u00a0them would be for naught.\u00a0 Well, I worked up the courage\u00a0this year to try using left over from\u00a0last year and you know what?\u00a0 We had the best crop ever!\u00a0\u00a0Both Red\u00a0Pontiac and Kennebec varieties did beautifully with no signs of disease or insect damage!\u00a0\u00a0So we\u00a0got free potatoes this year!\u00a0 Now, I can&#8217;t say that we will always have that kind of success, or never have issues with disease or insect damage, but I&#8217;m willing to take the chance and try it again next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_175836-e1471214395498.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-119\" src=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_175836-e1471214395498-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"20160814_175836\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_175836-e1471214395498-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_175836-e1471214395498-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_175836-e1471214395498-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some other things we\u00a0accomplished:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pulled up the first planting of green beans and hung them to dry for seeds\n<figure id=\"attachment_124\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180114-e1471214507282.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124\" src=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180114-e1471214507282-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"bean bushes drying on the garden fence\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180114-e1471214507282-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180114-e1471214507282-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180114-e1471214507282-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">bean bushes drying on the garden fence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180048-e1471214459626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121\" src=\"http:\/\/treml.com\/stonehouse\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160814_180048-e1471214459626-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"dry bean pods ready for seed harvest. These will be planted next year.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>John prepared\u00a04 beds and\u00a0I planted a second crop of broccoli (the spring crop didn&#8217;t do so well) in one bed and id=\"caption-attachment-123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the beds of black beans starting to sprout!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>I harvested some corn for dinner-it was delicious!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a white variety called Cloud Nine.\u00a0 I got the seed from Gurney&#8217;s<\/li>\n<li>started some cucumbers in a brine for dill pickles.\u00a0 These are different from the fermented cucumbers that I made (YouTube video coming soon!).\u00a0 I thought they were great but\u00a0John thought those still\u00a0tasted too much like cucumbers and he is not a fan.\u00a0 So I used the Ball Blue Book recipe for Brined Dills.\u00a0 I have the 3 gallon\u00a0crock full at the moment.\u00a0 They should be ready to can in 2-3 weeks.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_127\" id=\"caption-attachment-127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cucumbers with garlic and pickling spices in the crock weighted down by a plate to keep them under the brine.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second part of our week was consumed with Dutch&#8217;s surgery.\u00a0 If you follow us on Facebook then you know he had surgery for a torn ligament\u00a0on Wednesday.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty complicated surgery with strict precautions for several weeks after so we were\u00a0making some changes to\u00a0get the house ready for him.\u00a0 An area rug on our hard wood floors to make it easier for him to get up and down, more baby gates to keep him confined in a small space and re-arranging furniture to make for easier movement when he is allowed up just to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0 He came home on Thursday and for the next\u00a02 weeks he is only allowed out for 5 minute bathroom breaks but no other activity.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a challenge keeping our 135lb,\u00a0high energy boy quiet but thanks to the meds it&#8217;s not been too bad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128\" what we hope to accomplish this next week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ferment the beets we grew this year<\/li>\n<li>make laundry soap powder<\/li>\n<li>harvest the last of the cucumbers and pull up the plants<\/li>\n<li>harvest green beans<\/li>\n<li>continue planting fall garden veggies-kale, spinach, lettuce and\u00a0kidney beans<\/li>\n<li>harvest the rest of the corn and pull up the plants<\/li>\n<li>John is looking forward to trying out his new propane weed torch to take care of some of the more stubborn weeds he deals with this time of year<\/li>\n<li>take Dutch to have his stitches out.\u00a0 He also has a physical therapy consult as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00a0 What we&#8217;ve done and what we hope to do in the coming week.\u00a0 What have you
